As a chosen extracurricular activity for my weekends, I decided to take on a part-time job as a Computer Lab assistant at my school (lame as it sounds). It’s my first day and I have to spend it alone and using my best judgment for everything that comes my way. I have already come across some problems that I just couldn’t solve, let alone forgot to ask once I was getting my 20 minute in a nut shell orientation.
Issue #1: Got a call from someone misdirected to the wrong department. I couldn’t tell the person the true number for the dept that she wanted, nor were the extension numbers left for me. Man, did I feel like an idiot…
Issue#2: I’m asked repetively if the lab has color printing. Which I didn’t know or have knowledge of.
Issue#3: While classes begin in the lab, some instructors need projectors and unfortunately 2 of the room either had a non working one or one at all! I had to ration off one room for classes and pray they don’t occur at the same hours.
My biggest fuckup (besides blogging while working and web surfing shhhhhhhh!) was giving a student a copy of software without an id card to make sure he comes back (already might be my last day!)
I gotta admit there are some cuties that come through and im all about the eye candy, Plus it feels good to help people within my ability. I’m told I have the tolerance for it.

Man... after working in the AV dept for Purdue Calumet, I think I got some pointers for you. Redirect all calls to the information booth or the university's main telephone number. Tell people that there's only laser printing and they have to supply their own paper and if instructors ask for equipment tell them that it needs to be reserve at least 24hrs in advance. Thats how I survived for 5 years....
