Foreign movie Reviews pt.1

Being the nerd I am when it comes to flicks to get the heads up on then next flick they convert to American, I’m Kicking back and watching some of the foreign flicks I bought over the week. Here’s my review of a couple.

The Spear of Longinus / The Messenger

These flicks were about 30 minutes each but man where they entertaining. The director has made his mark with a few flicks and is all the buzz overseas. The first flick I saw by him called Versus didn’t impress me at all. It was an interesting flick about immortal battles between good vs. evil with zombies thrown in the mix. After I watched that flick I wasn’t too interested in any other flicks by him. Then “spear” came along and surprised me with its story. What I noticed about this director is that he can make a good story work for dirt cheap. The “Spear” Takes place within a war at a hospital where the sole doctor dies at the beginning and before the hospital is shut down the premises is invaded by soldiers carrying what we know better as the “Spear of destiny” One of their soldiers needs to be serviced and they only available person able to help her is the nurse. The wound is out of her league and its then a tall mysterious man enters the building and tells them she was attacked by a vampire. All in all the sets were short not much was used yet the story pulls you in despite the scenery (it all takes place indoors in 3 rooms) The extra short flick “Messenger” is also a great story which despite the length resolves very quickly and leaves you satisfied.

Nochnoy dozor a.k.a. Night Watch

This flick will be soon on its way from Russia to American theatres. By the description of the trailers and reading the synopsis you think you’re in for a horror type of flick. By looking at it I instantly thought of Clive Barker’s Night Breed since it seemed similar to that film. Once I saw it I was only 10% correct it takes the premise and flips it since the story is about a group who stop the supernatural during the day & night. Since the horror aspect of the flick would seem more on a psychological level they cheese it up by adding a “great one” who will make his choice to become good or evil. The film has definitely some cool elements to the flick along with some things that make you wonder but to rule it out as a culture clash. The main element I liked was the plot twist and how it avalanched from the beginning.

More on the way soon!
