hmph...sunday

I’m glad I stroked my curiosity and bought my Fm transmitter to play my mp3 player in my car. I couldn’t stand how it works. In the car the sound is very muffled similar to Am radio. I'll keep it in case I need it, it may come in handy at home. In the meantime I headed to the mall to pick up a new car CD adaptor (couldn’t wait Vee) for 5 bucks. As I took it to a check out the lady at the counter read off the total amount and then said to me "you can afford that" Now the first thing that popped in my head was Whut the fuck does that mean? Should I i'll out? Should I leave? or get upset? No. I just gave a fake 'heh' and smirk I could while giving her the evil eye. I instantly brushed it off and thought to myself old white people don’t realize the things they say.

Speaking of Mp3's, a brotha was so bored today that I made a tiny mix of the Coolie Riddim beat. I had to pat myself on the back because I feel I did a damn good job! :)

Options.

A big toss up goes to Soul Sides For giving me a good direction of where i want to take this blog. Then again maybe I might create another one. Audioblog Seems like a decent place to upload my mixes. The Monthly fee Deters me though.

Fuck a Ipod

I wanted an ipod but I knew I couldn’t afford it, not even on eBay. I wanted to graduate from my old Cd-mp3 player to something that could hold more music without the use of me switching and swapping frequently. The cd player definitely served me well and it’s still usable. And once I saved my cash a bit, I went on eBay and tried to get one again with no avail. So I did the next best thing and settle for another player because I was hungry enough for one as long as it did the job. My first official Player was a 10 GB Archos Jukebox (yeah, I know ya never heard of it.) It definitely did the job that I wanted and that was to have a player for all my music. I only loaded my most favorite files and still had space left over and for a few months it was a sweet deal, despite the fact the shuffle mode buffered certain songs over and over, and it used rechargeable AA batteries that needed to be recharged within 1-3 days after using and constant turning on and off. The last straw was when I accidentally dropped the player inside my book bag, after that the player was never the same. I now use it for only moveable storage because that the only real thing it’s good for now.

I invested again thanks to a sale and bought a more brand name player the RCA Lyra to be exact. I got a whopping 40 gigs and it already came with 10 gigs already filled with music from various genres. I intend on loading that bad boy up as well. I’m taking time getting used to working it but I should have it down in another month. This player is lighter than my archos so I’m going to do my best to see that my investment is not damaged. After this player goes to pot then I finally breakdown and get the ipod, and hopefully that won’t be till another couple of years.

Stole what?!

My boy & I was chillin last night checkin out the video clips of Jay-Z & Linkin Park together in concert I downloaded onto my x-box. The combination of the Black album vs. Meteroa was Raw! He brought up that he's a hardcore LP fan and played some of Park's songs in his cousin's presence. While one of them didnt care because they only supported R&B especially by black artists (aw well); The other claimed "Linkin Park Stole Rap!" In that case, who owned it last? & why were they so careless to let it get in the hands of another genre of artist. Even though the kid speaks from innocent ignorance (I believe there's such a thing but only when your young.) We both said we'd cop the combination album and he'd play it for his cousins and ask him how are they stealing it with Jigga with them?

My Life's OST (pt. 1)

Lets do something new.

If your life up to date were to have a soundtrack what songs would it contain? How many would it have? Double or one disc? I take to myself as a diamond with many facets representing my moods. So for one of two of those I put that into thought and broke down 10 songs (so far) that motivated me. So in no particular order here are some tracks that I felt keeping me going through out my life. Maybe you’ll relate.

Tracey Lee – Living on the edge

This particular track was my introspective song. The sample was a slowed down Isley Brothers beat which im not sure which one it was; anyway If you haven’t heard it Tracey basically breaks down his life and how he’s barely made it through everything. It reminds me of how my mother describes my years through school as a straight “D” student. The hook is the most memorable part of the song for me because I can recite it in my sleep. “I’ve walked on Ice, but neva fell/ was livin the Trife life but I neva fell/ It seems I’m headed for hell for ways like this/ It’s like that ya’ll Livin on da edge

Redman – Tyme 4 sum aksion

When I was ready to break shit, Punch Bitches titties off. Etc. This was my firestarter. Red basically put what I felt into words or when I was ready to get geeked I blasted this.

Puff daddy ft. Biggie – Victory

The name basically fits my mood when I ever felt On top of the world and nobody could fuck with me. It builds up into something spectacular for me and still does. This track is also a type to get me geeked to.

Rolls Royce – Wishin' on a Star

I’ve loveded (yeah, I said loveded) this song since I was little and the first time I heard it riding with my father. This track gives me hope something that I know I don’t have a lot of time for. I have to say Beyonce and the Cover girls did nice redos but in my eyes it doesn’t beat the original.

New Edition – Boys to men

Back in the day most brothas in my vicinity wanted to be like NE. I felt this track is one of my favorites because it speaks to the brothas like me and in some way without having to rap or cuss telling all the black men who listens “We going through the same things” that means a lot to me. Johnny Snapped on this one, joe

Nightcrawlers – Push the feeling on

Being a Chi-town native the sound of House is in my blood. This song represent the gotta get up and get out kinda vibe. So the hook is very repetitive but that isn’t a real problem in my view. To my life I’m still not sure what the dude is exactly saying either.

Royce da 59 – King of kings

The thunder comes in and a voice begins “I wake up… and I don’t know where I am…” The first time I heard this I know it was gonna be one of my favorites. No other track had 3 elements I loved. Inspiration beat to get geeked to. Royce snaps on the lyrical tip giving a perspective on a religious type of flow.

Slum Village – One Time ft. Pete Rock (original)

Hell it was hard to pick the exact EsVee track that I would always go back to. And next to ‘Players’ this is the next best. This is a get ya ride on at night kind of track. Many times have I cruised to the north burbs on the expressway just to bob my head to this. It fits me perfectly.

Michael Franks – Your secrets safe with me

What you say? Who the fuck is that? Well let me edumacate ya a bit. Mr. Franks is an Acid Jazz Artist. This song stays in my head mainly because of how my father rocked it when I was little. It grew on me as well. Even though if you heard it would belong on a lite easy listening station. It represents my trustworthiness. I never knew what it was but when people got to know me they wanted to share their problems with me. Since I’m a quiet guy I come off as a great listener.

Mary J. Blige – Be Happy

Yeah I’m surprised to have MJB in my list as well. This song represents my internal goal to find the piece of me in myself to become happy and build my esteem. Plus it’s the one Mary track I can listen all the way through without changing.

There's a taste. Well enough about mines. What’s yours? Something to think about or consider. I’ll post more in a few.

**To Be continued Soon**

Say it aint so...

After seven ground breaking albums, Gang Starr called it quits last year as Guru and DJ Premier decided to go separate routes creatively after having grown tired of bickering with the majors who failed to help them move units.

I had to scream like vader in episode III after reading that one.
This shit hurts, joe.

G.B. to a Superstar

luther.jpg

My mother loved you man, She was always at your shows whenever you were in town. You should hear my moms head explode screaming your name when you had a new album out. Even your Christmas album she cherishes. When Me and my brother told her she wouldnt believe it. She told us to Shut up. Eventually she accepted it and now she's taking it pretty hard. My favorite tracks from you were "The Glow Of love" "Give me the Reason" and the remix to "Can I take you out tonight" It's a damn shame you had to go you had no equal in your skill to swoon. You personally affected me by your Schoolhouse Rock extras featuring your as "Zack" shoing people how to get their future job and avoiding the mean old future blob. I knew something was wrong when the radio was playing songs some stations wouldnt normally play by you. I thought you was getting better from your stroke, sorry 2 hear ya left. Godspeed.

Message to The Rappers Claiming Chicago

It's bad enough that living in the 'Go, you can't become a star in anyway without backing. Dudes have to move to NY or Cali To make it anyway possible if they don't they won't survuve in the industry. Then there living in a new city yet they wanna scream chicago and that bothers me to no end. I hate that about my city yet we have so much talent here its rediculous. But I have to say some of ya'll fucking it up for the rest of us! With the exception of those who've moved into the city and became famous and those in R&B, im only speaking on the chosen few that's made it big time.

Kanye West

73-YE-kanye_west.gifYou started as a ghost beatmaker for various artists. When I got a hold your discography I was shocked to know some of my favorite songs in the past you produced. I gave you props because you compliment other producers like 9th wonder and the Neptunes so you’re not totally stuck on yourself. Right now you’re at the top of the game. Can’t anybody fuck with you and you know it and flaunt it. You say that you’re conceited and arrogant to make up for your insecurity. It’s a nice tactic and I do it myself from time to time; but not at the point you do. I’m serious, you try to be funny at the same time and it don’t work dude. I just saw a video in Canada at a radio station you throwing a hissy fit over them editing out white girl in your song. You even have to admit, look where you were and look at the majority of listeners you knew most of the listeners were Caucasian. You didn’t care, you proceeded throw a fit till they removed it. In your favor the radio personality was an idiot because all he kept asking for was freestyles and letting all your words go right out the other ear. Seriously for that fit you deserve to get stole on. You are turning out to be an embarrassment for my city and I don’t appreciate that. I also had a listen to you new album, I’m not feeling it like your first.

Common Sense

common.jpgEven if some wack ass homos tried to sue you for the name (where they at now?), thats what you'll always be to me. For a while you could do no wrong. I heard you name through the g.d.’s at my high school. They were saying how your style was raw and that you were from the city. I paid it no mind actually. When Frankie Jaye played your cut “Soul by the Pound” for the first time Saturday night I had to admit, the beat was tight but lyric wise I wasn’t feeling you. That all changed when I watched your video “Take it easy” on jukebox. That song blew my mind. It was definitely then that I had to cop your album. Once I got it I had to listen to the whole album to get my money’s worth and all I got were a good 3 songs that I enjoyed minus the remixes. The album can I borrow a dollar was like whatever for me then I saw you on BET doing “Hidey Hoe” Live. I couldn’t believe you’d do that of all songs live on the air. I saw that you tried to clean it up as best you could but those that liked the song were all saying “What up, BITCH?!” Instead of “What up Tramp?” A year went by, take it easy & soul by the pound were still on heavy rotation. It was then on 106 Jams broke out the first track from your next album. I was feeling the beat on “I used to love h.e.r.” from the get go. I didn’t pay attention to the lyrics till I bought the album. I bought that shit off that one song alone. Resurrection is indeed one of my favorite albums. Let me make this short though. I don’t know what it is but I have always liked every other album you’ve put out. In order: Resurrection, Like Water For Chocolate and now Be are all my favorite albums from you. Keep it up man but all I ask is please go back to the cap and leather jacket b-boy days and dump the mismatching ties with Bill Cosby sweaters and the grandpa plaid berets.

Twista

twista.jpgYou’re the only rapper NOT to leave the chi (far as I know) and get bigger and bigger with every album. Hell you and Jay-Z started the fast rapid fire rapping shit. Then you had busters like Bone scrubs in harmony claim you stealing their style. Man I remember the days when your were a baby faced super fast Mr. Tung Twista on the radio. I was there when you were crowned by the Guinness book or records as the fastest man alive. The demoted to fastest rapper because that dude from Micro Machines commercials (a.k.a. Blur from Transformers) bitched about it. I remember “Ratatatat”, and my favorite “Snap Happy” I remember you had beef with Naughty by Nature because He claimed you stole their flow after a while. In truth they stole yours. It wasn’t until “Po Pimp” you redefined yourself and improved your style. You went from Islamic soulja to denounced fat headed S-Curl wearing baller. I used to see you all the time at the local car wash getting your pimped out Rolls Royce washed walking into cellular one with your big ass fur coat. All I can say is that you’re doing your thing. I’m looking forward to the new Speed knot Mobstas album.

Da Brat

da-brat-top1.JPGI feel your passes to the chi are now revoked. You’re no longer a citizen. Hell you don’t even rap no more. I refuse to believe your sisters with Lisa Raye either.

Do or Die

dod3.jpgWhat can I say? You guys try to do your best to come up but some invisible force keeps you down for the time being. What is it? I have nothing but respect for ya’ll. The song “Po Pimp” is a classic. My personal favorite was “A player like me.” C’mon, you all would be much tighter if Johnny P and Twista were apart of your group. Your group’s name resembles your drive in the game. Keep it moving.

WHERE THE FUCK YA’LL AT?!?!

My fave 10 albums pt.1

I’ve seen a lot of other sites spit about their favorite albums so I had to do my piece. Personally its hard for me to express why I like them because if it was up to me i'd just have you listen to them. at gunpoint! >:) So brace yourselves the first five in no particular order…

PR.jpgPete Rock & C.L.Smooth – The Main Ingredient

My favorite track: I Get Physical
I recommend: I got a Love

I aint gonna lie I wasn’t really into them at first. One of the dudes at school looked just like C.L. I slept on them till I caught myself in the used CD store getting an earful of them. I was definely floored. Two things happened once I heard the whole album: I kept saying “damn!” a lot track after track and shelling out the seven bucks for it.

RAE.jpgRaekwon – Only Built for Cuban Lynx

My fave: Rainy Dayz
I recommend: Heaven or hell

There have only been 2 albums that made me want to holler (literally) once I heard an album. Rae’s one of the very very few that had me geeked to cop the album once it was released. My co-workers at the time were heavy hip-hop heads like myself and that’s how I got a hold of the first single “Glaciers of Ice” but it wasn’t until I saw the video for “Heaven or Hell than I finally said I gotta have it. I see now in the benzino & Mays reign of the “sauce” the album was bumped from a 4.5 to straight 5 mics. Whatever.

JB.jpgJungle Brothers – Done by the Forces of nature

My Fave: Beads on a String
I recommend: Doin our own Thang’ (ft. Native Tongues)

Out of the whole Native Tongues posse, the JBz were the only group I bought off instinct. It was something about them that related to me. There were many time I caught myself rocking to this album especially till 5am on Christmas morning. The fathers of the Clique deserve their props.

CUN.jpgCunninlynguists – Will Rap for Food

My Fave: Missing children
I recommend: Fukinwitchu

If you don’t know them, well let me introduce ya. They’re a 2 man group from the south. Kentucky to be exact the members consist of Deacon the Villain and Dj Kno. Together the created a sound that will eventually take notice in a good while. Will Rap for food was innovative and it proves that not only crunk music comes out of the south. Go to their Home site Qn5.com and download some of their stuff. (especially the new shit w/ Cee-lo!)

LB.jpgLittle Brother – The Listening

My Fave: Speed
I recommend: The way you do it

Wow, LB also proves decent rap can come out the south. Yet at the same time their style is reminiscent of the good ol’ Native Tongue shit. This is probably why I like them.

Man, describing my flava is hard work. the last five will show up in a minute.

MusEd

The kids I subbed for were doing a assignment gathering survey's. The majority of them were about music & sports

"Mr. Smith? Who's your favorite hip-hop/rap artist?"

"At the moment? it'll have to be Little Brother"

"Uhh...Who dem?"

I forgot who I was talking to. Kids dont listen to anything outside of radio and 106 & park. I didnt have time to explain and after looking at their list and have only to choose between Juvenile (ugh), Webbie (Hellz no!), Chingy(yuk), 50 Cent (help!) & D4L (that Laffy taffy is the most awful shit I eva heard!) I chose 50 since I cant stand most southern rap.
Now here's the part that confused me. One of the kids had a list that had respectively: Hip-hop, Rap, Rock, R&B.
I asked her whats the difference in her opinion what is the difference between hip-hop & rap.

"Rap is just hollering and cussing! and hip-hop is a mix of that with singing."

"I see, Give me an example."

"Okay, like D4L (the kids love this crap) That's Rap and B2K is hip-hop."

"But B2K Sings right? So wouldnt they be considered R&B?"

"No! because they have a rapper on the group."

Now there's some new education for ya. Doesnt matter if 4 out of 5 artist sings if one raps its Hip-hop. That new to meand all this time I considered them R&B. I had more other examples i could run through them but there wasnt time and since I was older they werent gonna hear me anyway. I just told her I chose Hip-hop & Rock. Of course she was surprised I chose Rock, an older black male listening to rock no way! I just told her i listen to alot of Linkin park and P.O.D. and that brought a smile to her face. Lawdy.

17. A favorite track from an outfit considered a “super-group"?
D.I.T.C. - Thick

18. A song that makes you reminisce about good times with a family member?
Whitney Houston – I will always love you.
This was my uncle’s favorite song before he died. For some reason he thought it was Stephanie Mills that was singin. He would holler “Sing it Stephanie!” Had us rolling… God rest the dead

19. Your favorite song at this moment in time?
I guess it would be Nujubes – Reflection eternal. There’s something about the piano and the hook that goes “you’re a flower…You’re a river…You’re a rainbow…”

Diddy these!

The mayor of my city names October 13th "diddy day" for his donations to such causes as HIV/AIDS and Breast Cancer. Now all thats good but, pump the brakes.

It took a dude from another city to get publicity when artist in the chi are also trying to make a way in the city. I felt that as a smack. Puffy (that’s what he started with that's what I’ll keep calling 'im) is a damn good business man despite his lackluster music. I'm not hating, good for him. Yet I feel that isn’t gonna slide when other Chicago artist have been doing their thing for a while now.

The radio was having a debate on which Chicago artist deserves to have a day named after them.
What it came down to is a face off between South side's Common and West Side's Twista.
Both sides represent yet give no reason why the other shouldn’t.

I guess they didn’t know about Common's Common Ground Foundation since 2004, which donates to HIV/AIDS as well as delivering computers to low income housing. Plus I feel his image of a street intellectual would come across the more thru the city. I don’t know of any associations that Twista might be in and if he is I commend him all the more.

But that who I felt should land it. Next time a key to the city, city cufflinks or even a day is rewarded to a celebrity. Make sure it's a native of the city is all i'm saying.
